Adam Haney and Addison Couch of Durant Honored by Shamrock Bank

Adam Haney and Addison Couch of Durant High School have been honored by Shamrock Bank.

Adam is a wrestler and football player and is the December 2024 “Impact Athlete of the Month.””.

On the mat, the senior has emerged as one of the top grapplers on coach Jim Taylor’s squad. In early competitions, Haney compiled a 6-4 record and finished second in the sprawling Westmoore tournament and 6th at the Southern Oklahoma Invitational Tournament in Duncan.  Through the years since his start in the third grade, Adam has wrestled in approximately 60 tournaments with 40 top three finishes.

“Adam is battling back with a vengeance after missing the entire 2023-2024 season due to a football injury,” Durant wrestling coach Jim Taylor said.

“Adam is one of the toughest athletes that I have had the pleasure of coaching. He is there every time the door is open and is the first to volunteer to put in extra time, either on the mat or helping to do a job outside the room.”

“He is a yes sir, no sir young man and is always there to help the less experienced wrestlers. Adam is a great teammate and what we want as a Durant Lion Wrestler.”

On the gridiron, Haney wreaked havoc on opposing offenses in the fall.  Named second-team all-district in 5A-3 at inside linebacker, Adam recorded 61 tackles with seven resulting in losses.  He also intercepted a pass, forced and recovered a fumble and blocked a punt.

At home in the classroom, Haney has compiled a 4.0 grade point average in courses taken concurrently at DHS and at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. In addition, Adam has represented his school at five college curriculum contests grading third three times and second twice. He also scored an impressive 35 on the ACT test and has been recognized by the National Indigenous Recognition Program for his academic achievements and test scores. 

Haney is undecided about his college destination.  However, the University of Oklahoma has awarded him the “Oklahoma State Regents Academic Scholar Program Award. ” It will pay cover all tuition and cash stipends and is valued up to $54,100.

Adam has worked as a Physical Therapy Aide at Durant Physical Therapy with an eye to a possible degree in that field. 

His parents are Micco and Erin Haney. He has one sister, Arlo.

Addison Couch is being honored for her contributions to the Durant High School Varsity Cheer squad.

The senior has been named “All Region” and is a four-time All-American Cheerleader. Her highlights include participating in wrestling state and winning the “TigerPalooza” competition.  She also serves as a coach at “Unstoppable Gymnastics” in Durant.

Durant Cheer Coach Lou Ann Lively said Addison has every quality a coach would want in a cheerleader.

“She has exceptional ability, is smart, has a positive attitude and always gives great effort.  She is constantly making up new routines to teach the team and is always trying to find new fresh ideas for school spirit.”

In addition to her cheer, Addison is great student with a 3.9 grade point average and has been honored by the Oklahoma and National Honor Society. In addition, she played the alto-saxophone  in the Durant band through her junior year and has served on the student council.

Addison plans on continuing her education at the University of Oklahoma where she will pursue a Major in Political Science with hopes to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a  Sooner cheerleader.

“When Addi makes up her mind to do something,” Lively added. “She is successful. ” 

Addison’s parents are Jonathan and Pamela Couch. She has two siblings, Aiden and Clay.
